How to clip, properly

The parts nobody tells you: which moments are worth posting, how to crop a wide stream to vertical without losing the webcam, how long a clip should be, and why captions decide whether anyone watches past the first second.

Start here

  • How to clip a Twitch VOD for TikTok — finding the six postable moments in a three-hour broadcast, cropping 16:9 to 9:16 without cutting off the cam, and the length that performs.
  • How to turn a YouTube video into Shorts — picking moments that stand alone with no context, the 3-minute ceiling, and whether Shorts cannibalise the original.

The short answers

How long should a clip be?

21–34 seconds for stream clips. Long enough for a setup and a payoff, short enough to be rewatched — and rewatches are what every short-form feed rewards.

Do captions matter that much?

Yes. A large share of short-form viewing is muted, and platform auto-captions are not reliably on. Burned-in captions are the difference between a clip that reads instantly and one that gets scrolled.

What can't be imported from a link?

Age-restricted, private and members-only videos — they need a signed-in session. Download those and upload the file instead; everything else about the process is the same.
